The "Dugout"
Situated on either side of the Infield is a roofed house-like structure where each player sits when he is not taking part in the Action on the Field. In the Olde Days, it was just an area where the Teams relaxed between Times At Bat or waited to occupy the field on Defense

However, when the game became popular enough to Build Stadiums and Charge Admission, the area became fenced-in to house the Players. Eventually the Fans who sat behind this structure complained they couldn't see and would express these feelings with an occasional well-placed bottle. To please the customers and to protect the Players, the ground was "Dug Out" two or three feet and protected with a roof.
